OPEN HOUSE

Every year, our school is having a special program, which is known as the open house. During the open house in 2010, my friends and I were supporting the program by helping to stay in the stands. There were some stands opened. A stand near the library was opened for the building tour, a stand near the door was opened for the parents association, a stand in the café was opened for the theatre arts, another stand used for coffee break, and many more stands were opened. However, we were not only having the stands. Some students were also welcoming the guest in the front office and some other students were waiting for the guest book. My teacher and I were waiting for the guest book.
The open house was held in two days, on Friday night and on Saturday morning. I got the job to stay in the guest book stand on the Friday night exhibition. In the guest book stand, we had to greet the guest as well. We had to ask the guest to write their name, their address, and the school that they were attending. After they finished wrote those data, we would give them a small sticker and stuck it on their clothes. If they already got their sticker, it means that they were now ready to enter the café, which is the place where we had our exhibition.
The open house was going very well. Most of the guest and the students really enjoyed the event. Some of the students and the teachers even sang some songs. Some other students were also performing a break dance. The night was going very well and very great. However, not only enjoying the night, but I also learn something from the thing that I have done. I learn how to be polite to other people. When I was standing near the guest book, I was really learning about politeness. I had to always be polite with the parents and the guests. We were also not able to just be quiet, but we also had to greet the guest and ask them politely to fill in the guest book.

In our daily life, maybe we often face a time where politeness is really expected. Maybe when we are facing an oral test with our teacher, or when we are facing an interview with the principal, politeness may become one of the plus points for us. That is why we need to always be polite with other people. The way we speak, the way we act, and the ways we think have to always be polite to others. Remember that being excellent is when we can control our mind, our skill, and our character.

MY COMMITMENT

For the next academic year, I am going to make three commitments. The first one is to maintain my positive behavior. In this academic year, I was doing a great job to have a positive behavior and an excellent mark. I believe that these good things should be maintain as well so that in the next academic year I can also achieve an outstanding result. To maintain it, I think that I have to keep on being a hard working person. Beside that, I also have to keep my relationship with God as well.

The second one is to not be too talkative. I think that in this academic year, I had become too talkative. In fact, when we become too talkative, then we might not concentrate well on the lesson. I think that I want to be more focus and more attentive in class. That is why in the next academic year, I want to be quieter and not too talkative. However, if we are becoming too quiet, then it will not be good also. When we are too quiet, we might then do not want to talk in discussion and many group works. If this happen continuously, then we might later becoming a shy person. Therefore, it will be better if we are not too quiet, but also not too talkative. We can just talk at the right time, right place, and to the right person.

My third commitment is to join more competition in order to improve my ability and my skill. As we all know, when we are joining the competition, it means that we are improving our ability, our skill, and our knowledge. We are learning to organize our time well, we are learning to cooperate well, and we are learning to develop our knowledge. Therefore, I think that joining more competition will be good for me to improve my skill as well.

SATU HATI CERDASKAN BANGSA

As one of the scholarship students, I ever went to a program called Satu Hati Cerdaskan Bangsa. This event was a very special event and was held in Mercure Hotel. Many of the other students from the other school also came to that event. They all looked so enthusiastic and excited.

When we first came to Mercure Hotel, we directly went to the second floor, and then we had to go to the registration place. After that, we could directly enter the hall. The first thing that we did is watching the show from a band. They were singing the song Satu Hati. However, after watching them for some time, then they asked all of us to sing together with them.

After that, the main part began. The program Satu Hati Cerdaskan Bangsa was looked like a conference that talked about the education in Indonesia. Maybe most of us already knew that the education in Indonesia is not well developed. Some of the schools are still under construction, some of the other schools are not having good equipment, some other schools are not having enough books, and some other schools might be very poor. This might be one of the reasons why Indonesia could not develop well. If the education level is high, then most of the citizen might be able to find a work. However, if the education level is low, then the people will not be able to find a work. As the result, most of the people are living below the poverty line.

Unfortunately, more than half of the children in Indonesia are not getting a good education. That is why Pocari Sweat was making this conference. They wanted us, as the next generation, to pay more attention on them, who do not get good education. We have to realize that many of the children are not having good education. However, realizing is not enough. We also have to do something more than just realizing. Because of that, the company of Pocari Sweat was making a program called one thousand each day. This program was a program given for the students. They were expected to take one thousand from their money each day and gave it as a donation for the children that did not have good education. The money would be organized by the company and then would be given to the poor school in many areas.

Besides teaching us to pay more attention on the poor school, the speaker there also taught us to have the five S habit of a good student. The first S is senyum, or smile. A good student has to always give smile to other people. A smile may also motivate us to be more enthusiastic in learning. Moreover, smile may also motivate other people to be more enthusiastic also. The second S is sapa, or greet. A good student has to always greet other people, such as teacher, principal, and friends. A greet will show that you are honoring other people. It also shows that you are a humble person that wants to pay attention on other people. The third S is salam, or shake hand. If you are having a conversation with other people that is having higher position that you, always make sure that you shake their hand. Shaking hand is also a kind of honoring other people, which is higher than you are. Do not always fold you hand in your chest because that will make you looks very arrogant. The fourth S is sehat, or healthy. A good student always keeps their body healthy. To keep our body healthy, we have to have good supply of food and enough exercise. If we are smart, but we sick, then our smartness may not be useful. We still have to stay at home and not going to school. That is why health is very important. Beside that, if we are healthy, then we will become more fit and more focus on the lesson. If we are not having enough sleep, then we might be sleepy at school. We might then become not focus on the lesson. Instead of paying attention, we might be sleeping in the class. That is why health is very important. It has a great effect on our study too! The fifth S is sembahyang, or prays. A good student is not only study, but also prays. Man may always try what ever they want, but God still becomes the One who decide what will happen next. If we are smart, but we are not having a good relationship with God, then our smartness will be nothing. God may make anything happen to us. That is why having a good relationship with God is very important.

Some of us might then think where study is. Why is study not becoming the good habit of a student? The reason for this is that study is the RESPONSIBILITY of a student. It is not a habit, but a responsibility. A habit is the good thing that we choose and we decide to do it. We have a commitment to do it. If a good thing is done continuously, then one day it will become our habit. Different from responsibility, a responsibility is the thing that we MUST do in order to finish our job well. If we do not do our responsibility well, then we might get a punishment, or we might not achieve the good thing that actually we are able to. In short word, responsibility is the thing that we must do, while habit is the good thing that should be done to improve ourselves.
In a conclusion, do not forget the five S habit of a good student. Do not forget to study. For an addition, we have to also help the poor schools. If we are having good schools, then we have to always be thankful. One of the ways to show our thanksgiving is by helping the people that needs our help too.

MANGROVE PLANTING

The picture is when I had to plant a mangrove and put a stick near it.
Nowadays, there are many issues about global warming and the effect of it for human. Because of those issues, people are now starting to take care of the environment. Some of the researchers are trying to change the fossil fuel with the relatively environmental friendly fuel. The government is also trying to reduce the risk of global warming by creating lots of program, such as planting many trees, 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle), limited electricity consumption, and many more. One of the other programs that they have is the mangrove planting.

Our school has ever joined many of the mangroves planting. One of them was the one located in Busem Wonorejo. On that day, the students had to come to school earlier. When we arrived in Busem Wonorejo, we had to first join the morning ceremony. After that, we could directly start the mangrove planting. However, we still had to wait for the boat to come since the mangroves were located along the river.

After waiting for the boat for some times, we then able to go to the mangroves land. At that place, we had to help the people there with the cleaning. As we all know, many people were throwing the trash in the river. All of those trashes were then put there and would be packed. The trash that had been packed would then be put in the landfill. Because of that, then we had to help the people with the trashes packaging. After finished, we had to then go back to the boat and went back home.

From this experience, I learn how to help the environment from dying. Many of us might think that the environment is very strong that it will also able to hold all of the trash that we throw. In fact, the environment also needs our help in order for it to survive. If the environment is not survived, it may cause lots of natural disaster, which may also affect our life. That is why we need to help the environment. Start that by doing small things, such as throwing the trash in the right place. Those may then help the environment to survive. Remember that a good environment may also make us to have a good life. Try to make a change and affect other people to also save the earth. If not us that start the change, then who else will do?

UC AND BUSINESS CHALLENGE

This is the picture of our team's logo.

The business challenge done in our school was amazing. It was really exciting and challenging. Most of the groups were very enthusiastic and very motivated to earn as much money as they could. However, things were not going that simple. We needed to pass through many steps during the business challenge.

UC Field Trip

The first thing that we did was the UC Field Trip. All students in grade 10 were going to Ciputra University for a Field Trip. It was done on Wednesday, 10 March 2010 and was taking one-day school hour. In the morning, we all gathered and had a short briefing, giving us information about the bus and about how we were expected to behave there. After one hour, we arrived in the university. The people there greeted us very well and they directly asked us to go to the fourth floor hall. In the fourth floor hall, a young man already prepared well for his presentation. After some introduction, he then gave his presentation about the ten myths on business. It covered the area of entrepreneurship and the things that we need to do in order to become an entrepreneur.

After that, we were having our break time. Then, we went back again to the fourth floor hall and we played a games. The games forced us to sell a flashlight to one of the three buyers. Most of the students were very enthusiastic, but they forgot to ask the buyer about the criteria. As the result, many of the groups lost in the first round. However, in the second round, we were doing much better job. The students started to ask the buyer about the type of flashlight that they wanted to buy. As the result, two groups won in the second round. From that field trip, we were learning something.

Do not expect the buyer to buy what you want them to buy. Let you provide what they want to buy.

Business Challenge Briefing

However, things did not stop until that field trip only. Now, the students had to be able to apply the concept that they had gotten. We then had a briefing about the things that we had to do, which was known as the business challenge. The business challenge was challenging the students to create their own business with their own ideas. All of the students were grouped into two or three groups each class. Then, they had to create their own store or their own brand. They had to create a new product with a new style.

Bargaining Process

About the stand, we were not just getting the stand that easy. Each of the group had to send some of their members to go to the bargaining process. Every group had to think creatively so that they could get the strategic place with the lowest price. The price would start at IDR 5000 and we had to offer a price above that. Our group won the place in front of the administration room with the price IDR 9000. Some of the other groups might get the stand in the backyard or near the administration room also.

Making Logo and Brand

After finished bargaining, now we had to make our own brand and our own logo. My group was making the brand “de VIP JB”. This brand stood for our group members. The word “de” stood for Gideon. The letter “V” stood for Vania, the letter “I” stood for Dwi, the letter “P” stood for Priscilia, the letter “J” for Julia, and the letter “B” for Bryant. This brand was also symbolizing our unity. We had to always work together and had to always help each other. If we were not helping each other, then our store might not run well. It might experience lost, or even not working at all.

Beside brand, we were also making our own logo. The logo in our group was made by myself and was designed in a blue background. The blue background symbolized loyalty. We were expecting each of our group members to be loyal to the store that we had. Our brand was made in purple because it symbolized authority. It was similar to our mission, which was to be the greatest food producing company. Moreover, we were also having a red line in the outermost side, which symbolized enthusiasm.

Proposal Making

The logo was now ready to be put on the proposal. The proposal that we made could not be in a formal format. It should be decorative, creative, innovative, and colorful. Beside that, it must explain something about our quotes, our company’s background, our logo, our purposes, our products, and our budgets. In the proposal, we said that our quotes was the quote from Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, which stated that to be successful you have to enjoy doing your best while at the same time contributing to something beyond yourself.

For the company’s background, we stated that our company was owned by six people, which were Vania, Dwi, Priscilia, Bryant, Gideon, and Julia. It was having its main store at 45 Kerintim Street. Similar to other company, our company was also having some purposes. Our main purpose was to make a product that fulfills the consumer’s needs. This was important because when the consumer did not like our product, then they might did not want to buy our product. That was why this became our main purpose. Our second purpose was to be the best food producing company and our third purpose was to grow as the best Multinational Company.

For the products that we sold, we were selling the cupcakes, coconut ice, stick ice, and pudding. However, when we were selling the product, we then change our mind. We added fruity ice to be sold also. For the advantages, we stated that our products were having many specialties rather than other products. One of the examples was that our products were using the recyclable material and were sold at relatively cheap price. For the budget, we stated that we only need Rp 200,000 for our budget.

We made our proposal in a unique model, which was in the model of a booklet. It was so small, since its size was only 10x14 cm. It was also colorful and creatively made. However, things did not stop here.

Presentation

After making the proposal, we now had to present our own proposal. We had to choose two of our members to present the proposal. In our group, our representatives were Bryant and Vania. The presentation had gone very well, but not until the question and answer time. During the question and answer time, we could not answer one of the questions, which was about our targeted profit. We did not know that we had to calculate our targeted profit. As the result, we were not successfully finished the presentation well. We might also be distracted with the class condition. It was crowded at that time, since the students were busy preparing all of the things needed for the selling time.

Buying Things

After finished presenting, then we had to buy the things we needed. In our group, we had to buy some of the materials, such as boxes, coconut ice, and the ingredients for the pudding making. However, in my class, things were happening a little bit disordered. Actually, we should present the presentation on Tuesday, and then started to sell things on Wednesday. However, since on Tuesday we were having a preparation for the Easter celebration, then we had to present our presentation on Wednesday. Therefore, for our group, we were buying the things first, before we finished presenting the product.

Packaging

After buying the things, we then packaged them with the special packaging. However, before we could package the product, we first had to cook the raw materials. After finished cooking, we then packaged them nicely. For the cupcakes, we were not cooking that one. Therefore, we were only packaging that with the boxes. If the consumer bought it in a small amount, we would give them a small box. When the consumer bought it in a large amount, we would give them the large box. For the pudding, we were packaging the pudding with the special cup. For the fruity ice, we were using the glass as the package. Not forgotten, we also stuck our logo in the package.

Selling Time

When the packaging was finished, it means that now was the time to sell the products. The selling time was very challenging, exciting, and interesting. We had to compete each other so that we could attract many buyers. The first floor became very crowded and very noisy. Every group had their own way to promote their products. Some of the students even went to the second floor and sold their products to the teachers and principals. One of the special experiences in our group was when we decreased our price continuously. First, we sold our cupcakes for IDR 6000. However, since we were starting to get bored, then we sold our cupcakes for IDR 5500. At last, we then sold our cupcakes for IDR 5000. After finished selling, we then realized that the last buyer would be luckiest of all. They could get the cheapest cupcakes!

Reporting

The selling was tiring, but our job had not done yet. We still had to make the report of all selling and buying. All of the notes and the activities done should be reported well. All of them were then presented in the form of table. For mathematics, we were also expected to make the profit percentage. The report should be made every day and not only the general one. We had to put details on our budget, our income, and our profit.

PONDOK HAYAT

The first picture is the picture of Pondok Hayat Orphanage.
The second picture is when I gave milk to the baby.

On Thursday, 1 October 2009, my friends and I went to Pondok Hayat Orphanage, which was located in Dukuh Kupang Street. This orphanage is an orphanage that wants to take care of the unwanted babies. When we first arrived there, a woman named Ms. Dewi directly brought us to the second floor. In the second floor, I had to help the person in the child care. The childcare consists of many children with age around one until 3 years old.

When I came at the first time, all of the children were still playing games. They were all playing until 11 o’clock. At 11.00, the children had to eat their lunch. Therefore, I had those children eating their lunch. Some of them were able to eat by themselves, but some others were not able to eat by themselves. Some of them even did not like to eat. As the result, I had to pay attention on them so that they were not playing with their foods. One of the children was too tired that he slept before he finished his food.

After finished eating, now the children had to take a nap. When they took a nap, I had to go to the babies’ room. In the babies’ room, I had to help the nurturer to change the diapers and to drink the milk. At 12 o’clock, we then had our lunch. At 1 pm, we had to go back to our room and helped the people there. However, when I went back to the babies’ room, the room was still being cleaned. Therefore, I had to go back to the child room.

When I went to the child room, the children already woke up and drank their milk. However, some of them did not want to drink their milk. As the result, I had to help them drank their milk. After finished drinking their milk, the children were then playing again. At 3 pm, the children had to stop playing since one of the nurturer said that the room was going to be cleaned. At the same time, our teacher told us that we had to go home. Therefore, we had to go down to the first floor and went home.

From this experience, I learn that life is not that easy. In the reality, some people have to experience many hard moments. Some of them have to struggle, some of them have to work hard, and some others even have to cry. If we are not experiencing the hard moments, then actually we have to be thankful to God. One way of being thankful to God is by not underestimate the poor people. Instead of underestimating, we have to always help them and share our love with them. If we are able to do that, then one day a big change might become true.

SANTA FOR ANGEL

The first picture is when we were in the orphanage.
The second picture is the card that we made.

The month December is well known for the Christmas. It is one of the biggest celebrations in a year. Many of the stores might give big sale and discount. Many people might also focus on having vacation with their family and their relatives. Some other people might also spend their time by going abroad. More than that, the Christmas itself is always well known for snow, even though not all countries are experiencing snow in December. In some countries, such as America, they might always spend their Christmas time with the snow, but for some other countries, such as Australia, their Christmas might be spent with the hot climate.

If people are having their own activities to be done in Christmas, our school is also having its own activities. On December 2009, our school was having the program Santa for Angel. In this program, we would go to some orphanages and then made some data about them. After that, a card would be published in our school and it would be put in a Christmas tree. Some of the students then might wanted to take the cards. Once they took the cards, it means that they had to adopt that child. They should give something to the child written there. After some weeks, the students would submit the gifts and then our school would bring the gifts for the orphan.

In this program, my friends and I were going to the orphanages, took some of their data, and then gave them some care packages. Some of the babies looked very funny, some of the children looked happy, and some others also looked scared. However, when we left the orphanage, some children were still looking for us, liked they did not want us to go.

After that, my friends and I had to make the cards. We had to design the cards by ourselves and we had to wait for Mr. Iskandar to print it. Then, after some weeks, we had to again re-arrange the gifts from the students. We had to grouped it based on the orphanages, and then checked whether all of the gifts already submitted or not.

When I did this activity, I feel very thankful to God that I can have both my parents and I can have a good school. If we look at the orphan in the orphanage, we might then feel pity on them. They are not well supplied and they need to be loved also. However, just because they are orphan does not mean that we can underestimate them. The orphans are also having their own ability, talent, and potential. We still have to respect them since we, as human, are still having some weakness also. Always be humble and respect others. In fact, when we can cooperate well with them, we might then develop our country to be a better country.
